Christmas is a special festival celebrated every year on December 25 to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. It is one of the most important festivals for Christians and is also enjoyed by people of many other religions. The celebration starts a few weeks before Christmas during a time called Advent and continues for twelve days, ending on Twelfth Night. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries and is a time of joy, love, and togetherness.
The story of Christmas comes from the Bible. It tells that Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. Since there was no room in the inn, they stayed in a stable, and that is where baby Jesus came into the world. Angels appeared to nearby shepherds and told them the good news. The shepherds then visited the stable and spread the message of His birth to others.
The date of Jesus’s birth is not exactly known. In the fourth century, the Church chose December 25 as the day to celebrate His birth. This date also matched the winter solstice in the Roman calendar. Later, most countries adopted the Gregorian calendar and continued celebrating on December 25. However, some Eastern Christian Churches still follow the Julian calendar and celebrate Christmas on January 7. For Christians, what truly matters is not the exact date but the belief that God sent His Son to Earth to bring hope and forgiveness to humanity.
Across the world, Christmas is celebrated with joyful traditions and colorful customs. People decorate their homes with Christmas trees, lights, wreaths, and stars. They exchange gifts, send greeting cards, sing carols, and enjoy special meals with family and friends. Children wait eagerly for Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas or Saint Nicholas, who brings presents and spreads cheer.
Today, Christmas has become both a religious and cultural celebration. It is a time when people come together to share happiness, show kindness, and make memories with loved ones. Beyond the decorations and gifts, the true spirit of Christmas lies in love, generosity, and peace.
