A tragic train collision near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening has left at least eight people dead and several others injured. The accident occurred around 4:00 p.m. when a MEMU passenger train collided with a goods train near the station. The impact was severe, trapping a few passengers inside the mangled coaches. Rescue teams, along with local authorities, are working to cut open the damaged bogies to rescue those still stuck.
Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal reported that the last wagon of the goods train struck the first coach of the passenger train, leading to the fatal crash. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the incident, directing officials to ensure all possible help and relief measures. He stated that the government stands in solidarity with the affected families during this difficult time.
The South East Central Railway (SECR) has announced compensation for the victims — ₹10 lakh for families of those who lost their lives, ₹5 lakh for the seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries. Senior railway officials are at the accident site, supervising the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
A detailed investigation will be carried out by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to determine the cause of the collision and recommend measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
