Maharashtra Becomes First Indian State to Partner with Elon Musk’s Starlink for Satellite Internet Connectivity

Elon Musk’s Starlink has entered into its first official partnership in India with the Government of Maharashtra to deliver satellite-based internet connectivity. The Letter of Intent (LOI) for this collaboration was signed by Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, and Virendra Singh, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Information Technology, in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Announcing the development, Fadnavis described Starlink as one of the leading companies in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector and expressed pride that Maharashtra is the first state in India to join hands with it.

This partnership aims to bring high-speed satellite internet to rural areas, government institutions, and public infrastructure in remote and underserved districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv. The initiative will also strengthen Maharashtra’s flagship Digital Mission and support projects focused on electric mobility, coastal development, and disaster resilience. Fadnavis emphasized that Starlink’s arrival will help bridge connectivity gaps and accelerate the state’s progress toward inclusive digital transformation.

Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer said the company’s mission is to connect people left behind by traditional internet infrastructure. She expressed excitement about collaborating with Maharashtra in this first-of-its-kind initiative in India. Dreyer added that the state’s vision for inclusive and resilient digital growth aligns perfectly with Starlink’s goals. Together, they aim to demonstrate how satellite-based internet can transform education, healthcare, and community services across Maharashtra’s remotest regions, promoting innovation and equal access to digital opportunities.
